Protecting Our Seniors: Addressing the Growing Threat of Cyber Fraud
At Grandmas Off Limits, we are dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of our seniors in an increasingly digital world. The rise of cyber fraud poses significant risks to older adults, often leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. Our mission is to provide resources, education, and support to help seniors recognize and combat these threats. Together, we can empower our older generation with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the online landscape safely. Join us in our commitment to protect those we care about most from the dangers of cyber fraud.
About Us
Senior citizens are increasingly vulnerable targets for cyber fraud and financial exploitation. In 2022, Americans aged 60 and above reported losses totaling $3.1 billion due to elder fraud crimes, with over 88,000 complaints filed. This age group is particularly susceptible to tech support scams, investment fraud, cryptocurrency-related schemes, as well as "love interest" and family fraud. These fraudulent activities can occur through the Internet via email, mail, or telephone.
The FBI reported a 14% increase in elder fraud cases between 2021 and 2022, with investment scams being the costliest. Various factors contribute to seniors' vulnerability, including social isolation, trust in others, and potential cognitive decline. Despite these alarming statistics, many cases remain unreported due to embarrassment or a lack of awareness.
As the elderly population continues to grow, projections suggest that nearly one in four Americans will be 65 or older by 2060. Addressing this issue is becoming increasingly critical. For these reasons, Grandma’s Off Limits was established. Everyone has had a grandparent, been a grandparent, or will become a grandparent during their lifetime. It is both shameful and tragic that seniors are targeted for the very reasons we hold them dear.
Let’s unite to give seniors the resources and education they need to avoid becoming victims. To all hackers and scammers: this is your notice to cease targeting this cherished population. Starting today, GRANDMA’S OFF LIMITS!
